Luke-Dorf opened the Washington County Safe Haven in the historic Wehrung House in early 2007, and an adjacent 14 bed facility for dually diagnosed homeless people in December of 2007. The Safe Haven, a Hillsboro landmark built around 1850, was fully renovated and has become a welcoming home to ten homeless people. Both projects are made possible by the collaboration and generous support of Senator Gordon Smith, Nike Corporation, HUD, State and County offices, the City of Hillsboro, and many other community partners. Safe Havens use a HUD-sponsored model to provide housing and safety to those living on the street, and gradually connect them with needed mental health services.
